PALO ALTO, CALIF. ? The Stanford Intercollegiate came to a close on Sunday with the Duke Women's Golf team finishing seventh with a 54-hole total of 882, which was being played at the 5,895-yard, par 71 Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif. The Blue Devils played the weekend shorthanded as sophomores Amanda Blumenherst and Jennie Lee were playing in the 2006 Women's World Amateur Team Championship in South Africa.
Taking home the team title was Vanderbilt with a total of 855, while Arizona (860), Georgia (862), Stanford (863), San Jose State (877), Oregon (878), Duke (882), New Mexico (884), UCLA (884) and Arkansas (886) rounding out the top-10.
“Obviously we didn't shoot the kind of numbers that we are accustomed to,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “The absence of Jennie and Amanda wasn't a 27-shot difference. We have some improvement to do. I was happy with some of the under-par rounds, but we didn't have enough of them this weekend. This course was playing less than 6,000 yards and for whatever reasons we were not shooting under par like we did last year.”
Freshman Alison Whitaker concluded the weekend with a one-over-par, 72, as she finished the tournament with a career-best 54-hole total of 215, which was 12th. For the second time out of three rounds at Stanford, Whitaker posted 15 pars on Sunday, while also collecting one birdie and two bogies. She concluded the tournament with 42 pars, which ranked first in the tournament.
Jennifer Pandolfi finished off a sold weekend with a 74 on Sunday and was tied for seventh with a 214 through 54-holes. The Navarre, Fla., product posted two birdies and five bogies on the day as she concluded the weekend with 10 birdies.
“Both Alison and Jennifer each had pretty good tournaments,” said Brooks. “I was happy with some of their numbers but everyone on the team realizes that we need more rounds in the 60s with this type of course.”
Playing in her third collegiate round, freshman Yu Young Lee had a stellar round on Sunday as she notched a career-best 75. This was after totaling rounds of 84 and 85 the first two days. A native of Orlando, Fla., Lee was one-over-par through eight holes but a double-bogey on No. 9 led her to a three-over-par, 38, as she made the turn. On the back nine, Lee had a birde on the 15th hole to go along with six pars and two bogies. She finished tied for 73rd with a 244.
After carding an one-under-par, 70, on day one, senior Anna Grzebien had her second straight over-par round on Sunday as she posted a 77. She started the day with a par on the first hole and then went four straight holes with bogies as she made the turn at 39. On the back nine, Grzebien was one-over-par through seven holes before notching a birdie on the 155-yard, par three 17th, but a double-bogey on the 18th led her to a 77. For the tournament, she finished with a 223, which was tied for 38th.
Freshman Rebecca Kim finished Sunday with a 76 and was tied for 55th with a 232.
Last year, Duke shot a tournament-record, 834, led by Liz Janangelo's 11-under-par total of 202. Duke will next travel to the NGCA Women's Collegiate Match Play Tournament from Nov. 3-5 in Orlando, Fla.
