DURHAM, N.C. ? On a night where the first 400 fans in attendance will receive a free adidas scarf, the 23rd-ranked Duke Women's Soccer Team will host Clemson on Thursday at 7:00 p.m., in Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils have only two home regular season contests remaining as Duke will also host third-ranked Florida State on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
The Blue Devils enter Thursday with a 7-5-2 overall record, while owning a 3-2-1 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) action. Clemson currently sits at 8-6-1 overall, 3-3-1 in the ACC, and is coming off a 2-1 victory over eighth-ranked Wake Forest over the weekend. So far this season, Duke owns a 4-2-1 overall record in matches played at home.
In the overall series, Clemson leads 8-6 and has won the past seven straight contests over the Blue Devils. The last win for Duke over the Tigers came in 2000 as the Blue Devils notched a 1-0 victory in the ACC Tournament in Durham, N.C. Clemson has dominated the series as of late shutting out Duke in five of the last seven contests, while the Blue Devils have not scored against the Tigers since a 3-2 loss in Durham back in 2002. Over the last three years, Duke has lost three consecutive 1-0 matches to Clemson.
Duke is coming off a match where the Blue Devils tied Maryland, 0-0, on Saturday. As a team, Duke outshot Maryland 37-16, but could not get the ball in the back of the net. On the season, freshman KayAnne Gummersall leads the Blue Devils with six goals, while senior Sarah McCabe has four and both senior Rebecca Moros and freshman Elisabeth Redmond each have registered three goals scored.
In ACC games only, Gummersall ranks tied for second in league play with 0.50 goals per game and tied for sixth in points per game (1.0). Duke is currently ranked 23rd in the nation in the SoccerTimes.com poll.
The Oct. 11 match against Wake Forest that was postponed due to inclement weather has now been rescheduled for Sunday, Oct. 29 at 6:00 p.m. The contest will be played in Winston-Salem, N.C. On Oct. 11, the two squads played for 52 minutes and 49 seconds before an hour and 10 minute lightning delay forced the game to be postponed with the Blue Devils leading, 1-0, over the eighth-ranked Demon Deacons.
