Duke linebacker Michael Brown has been named First Team Freshman All-America by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), the national organization announced on Wednesday.
Brown, who also received the honor from The Sporting News and Scout.com, capped with rookie campaign with the Blue Devils by leading Duke in total tackles with 92 to go along with 10 tackles for loss, three caused fumbles and one quarterback sack. The Houston, Texas, native registered three double digit tackle games over the final month of the season including a season-best 15 stops versus Wake Forest.
Brown is one of five players from the ACC named to the 27-member team, joining quarterback Drew Weatherford of Florida State, offensive lineman Andrew Gardner of Georgia Tech, defensive back Tony Carter of Florida State and defensive back Kenny Phillips of Miami. In addition, former Duke head coach Steve Spurrier, who guided South Carolina to seven wins and an Independence Bowl berth, was named the national first-year coach of the year.
