DURHAM, N.C. - J.J. Redick enjoyed a phenomenal shooting performance by knocking down 11-of-13 field goal attempts including eight three-pointers en route to scoring 40 points as second-ranked Duke defeated Virginia, 82-63, on Saturday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With his third 40-point game of the year, Redick moved past Mike Gminski and into third place on Duke's all-time scoring chart. The Roanoke, Va., native now has 2,360 career points and trails only Christian Laettner (2,460) and Johnny Dawkins (2,556) on the school's all-time list.
Duke has now won 22 of the last 24 meetings with Virginia including nine straight in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils (19-1 Overall, 7-0 ACC) sprinted out to a 20-2 lead nine minutes into the game as Redick scored 11 points in the run.
After Virginia (10-7 Overall, 4-3 ACC) pulled within 12 points on three occasions, the Blue Devils pushed the advantage back to 17 when Josh McRoberts scored to make the score 33-16 with 3:48 remaining in the half. The Cavaliers then outscored Duke 8-2 to close the half for an 11-point deficit at intermission.
Out of the lockerroom, Duke used an 18-6 spurt to go ahead 53-30 at the 15:01 mark when DeMarcus Nelson scored on a layup. The Blue Devils would lead by as many as 29 points down the stretch.
In leading Duke in scoring for the 17th time this season, Redick buried 8-of-10 three-point attempts and 10-of-11 free throws. He has now reached double figures in all 20 games this season while topping the 30-point plateau eight times.
Shelden Williams added a double-double for the Blue Devils with 17 points and 10 rebounds to go along with eight blocked shots and four assists. With his 17 points, Williams now has 1,608 career points to rank 21st all-time at Duke. McRoberts finished the night with nine points while Greg Paulus handed out a game-high eight assists.
For Virginia, J.R. Reynolds led the way with 19 points while Sean Singletary contributed 13 points and six assists.
