DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke wrestling team dropped their seventh straight dual meet, falling to Maryland, 21-12, on Saturday afternoon at Comcast Pavilion. The Blue Devils fall to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the ACC while the Terrapins improve to 6-7 overall and 4-0 in conference action.
The dual meet began at 197 pounds and Maryland grabbed a 3-0 lead with an 11-7 win by Jerry Afari over Duke sophomore Konrad Dudziak.
A forfeit at heavyweight gave Duke a 6-3 lead but Maryland won six straight decisions to go ahead 21-9. James Knox registered a 4-1 win over sophomore Kellan McKeon at 125 pounds, Brendan Byrne defeated freshman Michael Degli Obizzi, 9-6, at 133 pounds and Alex Krom scored a decision win over junior Philip Wightman at 141 pounds.
Junior Daniel Shvartsman lost his match to Andrew Schlaffer at 149 pounds, falling, 9-7, in the one minute sudden victory period. Schlaffer scored the winning takedown 20 seconds into the overtime period to put the Terps ahead 15-6.
Freshman Cameron Harms was defeated by Adam James, 8-4, at 157 pounds before Maryland's Adam DeCosmo edged redshirt freshman Aaron Glover, 5-4, at 165 pounds.
The Blue Devils closed the dual meet with a pair of victories as senior Levi Craig defeated Mike Maceroli, 8-2, at 174 pounds and redshirt freshman Dan Tulley outlasted Luke Stauffer, 6-4, at 184 pounds.
The Duke wrestling team will travel to Chapel Hill on Tuesday to face Tobacco Road rival North Carolina at 7:30 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels (12-6-1 overall, 0-1-1 ACC) were also defeated by Maryland on Saturday, falling to the Terps, 24-18.
