KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ? The No. 14 Duke women's tennis earned a dominant victory on the road over No. 19 Tennessee Sunday, defeating the Lady Vols, 6-1, to open the 2006 season. The Blue Devils won the first two doubles matches and then claimed victories in five straight singles battles to come away with the win, making them 1-0 this season.
Junior Jennifer Zika and freshman Melissa Mang, the 41st-ranked pair in the country opened play, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first doubles contest and eventually defeating Tennessee's Ghizela Schutte and Stephanie Harris, 8-3 on court three.
No. 10 Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson claimed the next win for Duke by posting an 8-6 victory over No. 38 Melissa Schaub and Samantha Orlin, clinching the match on court one. Bercek and Robinson grabbed a 7-3 lead before Tennessee rallied to make it 7-6, but the Duke team proved victorious. Senior Jackie Carleton and junior Kristin Cargill put up a fight but lost to the Vols' Blakeley Griffith and Victoria Jones, 8-6 on the second court, but the Blue Devil doubles point had already been won.
Duke won five straight singles matches on courts three, one, four, five and two before Tennessee finally picked up a win on court six. Freshman Tara Iyer opened the singles action with a 6-3, 6-0, win over Melissa Schaub on court three, and No. 6 Bercek followed, defeating Victoria Jones, 6-2, 6-1, to make her 8-1 in singles play during her time with the Blue Devils.
Mang fell behind 5-4 in her first set against Schutte but pulled ahead to win 7-5 and picked up an easier 6-1 victory in her second set. No. 27 Carleton had a similar result on court five, where she went up 5-1 on Blakely Griffith before Griffith came back to knot the score at 5-5. Undeterred, Carleton won the next two games to take the first set, 7-5, and secured the match with a 6-2 second-set win.
Cargill won a 6-2 first set against Orlin, but the Tennessee freshman retired due to injury, giving the Blue Devils the win. Harris finally broke away from Duke's Robinson in three sets, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 for the Vols' second win of the day.
The Blue Devils return to action next Sunday with a 10 a.m. contest at No. 32 Indiana.
