Gail Goestenkors ACC Teleconference
On the team:
“Well, we are just coming off of a pretty grueling road stretch. Played four games all on the road in the last nine days, so we are happy to be back home. I am just really proud of the team, the way they handled several situations. We knew it would be a great challenge for us, mentally and physically, and I thought we did a good job. We had a tough game up at Maryland against a great opponent and I thought we played really well. We had some good spurts and then also some struggles. Certainly at Georgia Tech we struggled and really went down to the wire. It was good for us to see how the players would respond in that situation, because we haven't had many of those. And then at Boston College being down by nine in the second half, we were tested again. I think those were really good tests for us and it was good to see the way that we responded. We have N.C. State coming up and it just seems like with this conference, every game is a big game. It is an exciting time for women's basketball in the ACC.”
On N.C. State post-duos Tiffany Stansbury and Khadijah Whittington:
“I think they are two of the best posts in the conference, which means that they are two of the best posts in the country. This conference is - I have to say - we have the best posts in the country, within this conference. There are so many teams that have great tandems, and N.C. State is certainly one of them. They are very athletic, they rebound the ball very well, they are tough to defend because they can shoot a little bit from out and also take it off the dribble. So, once again, it will be a tough challenge for us.”
On Crystal Langhorne and Erlana Larkins:
“They are similar in that they are both winners and they are both champions. They are both relentless, is the word I would use. I told Erlana that she was a warrior. She was just so relentless on the boards and just with the level of intensity that she played at. I guess the difference is that Erlana wears her emotions on her sleeve. She gets everybody excited and involved in the game. Crystal plays just as hard but she plays very even keel. Rarely does her expression change throughout the game. They are both relentless and both very versatile. They can shoot the 15-foot high-post shot, they can both put it on the ground and score, and they both require a double-team down on the low block. I think the difference between them last year and this year is that they both learned to pass out of those double teams, so they are excellent passers as well. I think they are more similar than different.”
On strength of the league as a whole:
“Last year with the RPI, we were ranked as the best league in the country. We knew, just looking at our rosters over the summer, basically we were all better. We felt that this would be, by far, the best year for our conference. I think it is showing up in some of the scores that you are seeing across the nation.”
On Duke and Carolina's dominant in-conference record and if it affects how the ACC is perceived:
“No, not at all. I think that the conference season has really just begun, so there are still so many more tough games to be played. I don't know that we are going to dominate throughout the conference. I think that there are just too many teams for that. I think all of our teams have established themselves throughout the non-conference season as well with some big wins.”
On any match-ups or factors of great importance versus Tennessee:
“I honestly have not watched them yet, even when they were on tv. It has been a rugged time for us, with all these games, but I know that Candace Parker obviously poses a tough match-up for anybody in the country. She is so skilled on the low block and at the high post, and not just can she score with her right or left hand and hit that 17-foot jumper, but she is also an incredible passer so it makes it very difficult to double her. I guess if there is any match-up in particular it would be us trying to figure out who is going to defend Candace Parker.”
