LAS VEGAS ? A pair of Duke freshmen ? Tara Iyer and Melissa Mang ? began the first spring season of their Duke women's tennis careers with a bang, upsetting players from the two top-ranked teams in the country Friday at the Freeman Memorial Invitational hosted by UNLV.
Iyer defeated No. 2 Anne Yelsey of Stanford, the No. 1 team in the country according to the first Fila Collegiate tennis poll released Tuesday, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Mang lost in the second round, but her big win came in the first match, when she defeated No. 15 Boglarka Berecz of second-ranked Florida.
“This was really good for both players to get some confidence heading into the spring season,” said head coach Jamie Ashworth. “Both of them had decent wins in the fall, but neither of them had quality ranked wins where you thought, ?Wow, that was amazing,' or ?she has to be in the top half of our lineup.' To get those wins in the first matches of the spring is really good, and hopefully it will set the tone for the rest of the season.”
The loss to Iyer was Yelsey's second to a Duke player in 2005-06, as junior Daniela Bercek defeated her, 7-5, 6-0, in the quarterfinals of the fall Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Tournament.
Senior Jackie Carleton and freshman Jessi Robinson also represented No. 14 Duke at the Freeman Invitational. No. 27 Carleton topped No. 62 Natasa Vuckovic of South Carolina before falling in the second round to UCLA's Laura Gordon. Robinson lost her first match to another UCLA contender, Tracy Lin.
With only four players at the tournament, Duke had the opportunity to try out new doubles pairings, but the duos of Mang/Iyer and Carleton/Robinson lost their first-round matches. Mang and Iyer fell to Capannolo/Abdalla from Arizona State, while Logar/Durkin of Stanford defeated Carleton and Robinson.
Play resumes at 1:30 p.m. EDT Saturday at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex.
