DURHAM, N.C. - Shelden Williams registered just the third triple-double in Duke history as the top-ranked Blue Devils defeated Maryland, 76-52, on Wednesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Williams picked up 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocked shots to join Gene Banks and Art Heyman as the only Duke players to achieve the feat.
The Blue Devils forced 29 turnovers and held Maryland 32 points below its season average to push its record to 15-0 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Terrapins fall to 11-4 overall and 1-2 in the league. Duke never trailed in the contest as Greg Paulus scored the first five points, and the Blue Devils led 19-8 when J.J. Redick buried a three-pointer at the 13:24 mark.
Duke built a 45-22 lead at intermission as Maryland made just eight-of-28 (.286) field goal attempts and committed 18 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. The Terrapins, who had defeated Duke in the three previous meetings, shot 30.2 percent from the floor for the game.
Redick paced the Blue Devils with 27 points including four three-point buckets and the first dunk of his collegiate career, a two-handed slam with 5:35 left in the game. Paulus and Sean Dockery joined Redick and Williams in double figures with 10 points each. The Blue Devils had 18 assists on their 26 field goals, with Dockery producing a game-best four to go along with his five steals and four rebounds.
Banks logged 13 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists against Lehigh on January 9, 1978 while Heyman carded 21 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists versus Virginia on February 28, 1963. Williams also moved into sixth place on the ACC's all-time blocked shots chart, passing Clemson's Elden Campbell (334) and Maryland's Derrick Lewis (339). Williams now has 341 career rejections and is four short of matching the school record held by Mike Gminski.
Chris McCray led the Terrapins with 12 points.
