COLLEGE PARK, MD. ? Daniela Bercek, a junior transfer from UCLA, won the Flight A singles bracket in the first tournament she played in as a Blue Devil Sunday when she defeated Ekaterina Burdull of Washington State 6-0, 6-3 in the championship game at the Maryland Invitational. Bercek, the fifth-ranked individual in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason poll, was the top seed in the bracket, while Burdull was third.
Bercek also teamed up with freshman Jessi Robinson to play in the doubles Flight A championship, but the pair, ranked 11th among Division I teams, fell in a tiebreaker to second-seeded Marianne Baker and Ramona But of Maryland, 9-8 (4).
Senior Lauren Archer and junior Parker Goyer played in the consolation finals of the Flight A doubles bracket, falling to Lauren Connelly and Kiki Stastny of Notre Dame, 8-2.
Duke women's tennis picks back up next weekend with some players competing in the Cal Invitational at Berkeley Fri., Sept. 30-Oct. 2, and some heading to the prequalifying round of the All-American Tournament Oct. 1-2.
