NASHVILLE, TENN.? With 18 holes remaining at the 2005 Mason Rudolph Collegiate Championship, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team sits four shots off the lead in fourth place at the at the 6,217-Yard, Par 72 Vanderbilt Legends Club in Nashville, Tenn.
The Blue Devils shot a nine-over-par 297 on Saturday and enters Sunday's play four shots behind host Vanderbilt (578) and Georgia (578). Duke owns a 36-hole total of 582, after posting a three-under-par, 285, on Friday. Rounding out the top 10 are Arizona State (579), Duke (582), UCLA (585), Arkansas (587), Auburn (589), Wake Forest (590), Tulane (595) and Florida (601).
Duke freshman Amanda Blumenherst continued her stellar play on Saturday and enters the final round at four-under-par, 140, which is three shots off the individual lead. On day two, Blumenherst turned in a one-under-par, 71, after collecting a 69 on Friday. The native of Scottsdale, Ariz., opened play in the morning with four straight pars before committing two bogeys on holes five and nine, while notching a birdie on the par-five seventh. Blumenherst made the turn at one-over-par, 37, but played the final nine holes at two-under-par with birdies on both par five's, holes 14 and 18.
“I don't go into seasons with expectations on my players and I am not surprised with what Amanda has done this weekend,” said Brooks. She played well all summer long and shoots some low numbers. Golf is not the type of sport that when you go to college you change anything. You play the same type of golf during the summer than you do during the college season.”
Junior Anna Grzebien had a tougher day on Saturday after firing a three-under-par, 69, on day one. A product of Narragansett, R.I., Grzebien had a 75 on day two after notching five bogeys to go along with two birdies on holes eight and 18. She sits tied for fifth with a 36-hole total of 144.
Duke's other incoming freshman, Jennie Lee, had another strong round on Saturday with a one-over-par, 73, and is tied for 17th with a two-day total of 147. For the second straight day, Lee struggled out of the gates with two straight bogeys on the first and second holes, but settled down to play the next 11 holes at three-under-par. Lee, a native of Huntington Beach, Calif., then had a double-bogey on the par-five 14th, bogey on the 16th and birdie on the 17, before turning in a par to finish the round with a 73.
Senior Liz Janangelo's day was marred by the double-bogey as she had three different holes where she notched the two-over-par scores. A product of West Hartford, Conn., Janangelo played the other 15 holes at even par with a bogey on No. 2 and birdie on No. 18. For the second straight morning, Janangelo posted a double-bogey on the par-four ninth and then had double-bogeys on No. 15 and No. 16. She finished the day with a 78 and is tied for 39th with a 151.
Jennifer Pandolfi, a sophomore from Navarre, Fla., had a 79 on day two and is tied for 64th with a two-day total of 156. Pandolfi had an eventful day with four birdies, seven bogeys and two double-bogeys. The four birdies were tied for a team-best along with Lee.
On the day, the Blue Devils had a total of six double-bogeys and 12 birdies. Duke scored the par-four ninth hole at five-over-par, but played the par-five 18th hole at three-under-par and were a total of four-under-par on the par-fives.
“I am very happy we have three different golfers post birdies on the last hole,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “It is one thing to get down for a few holes, but they kept fighting. Those birdies might just keep us in the game.”
Leading the individual action is Vanderbilt's Jacqui Concolino with a seven-under-par, 137.
Last season, Duke trailed by seven strokes heading into the final round and ended up winning by one stroke over UCLA. After the first round of play last year, the Blue Devils were down with a total of 12 shots.
“There was more win today and that definitely was a bigger factor than yesterday,” said Brooks. “It effected scoring, no question about it.”
Duke will tee off beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday in a shotgun start on holes four, five, six and seven.
