WILLIAMSBURG, VA. ? Coming off an overtime victory over UNC Greensboro on Friday, the eighth-ranked Duke women's soccer team went two overtimes at William & Mary on Sunday evening to finish with a 1-1 tie at the Albert-Daly Field in Williamsburg, Va. Duke now owns a 1-0-1 record, while William & Mary is 1-0-1.
The Blue Devils got on the board first at the 37:05 mark of the first half as junior Sarah McCabe drove down the right side deep in Tribe territory and sent a cross to senior Carolyn Riggs, who was unmarked at the left goalpost, and headed home her first goal of the year. Riggs, a product of Indianapolis, Ind., now owns 27 career goals and 68 points to move her into sole possession of sixth place on Duke's all-time points list.
William & Mary came right back six minutes later to even the match, 1-1, as Tiffany Chudoba sent a cross into Mary Mackenzi Greer who headed in her first goal of the season.
At the end of the first stanza, Duke held an 11-2 shot advantage but the score remained 1-1. Tribe goalkeeper Kellie Fenton registered six saves in the first half to keep the score tied.
The second period was much different as William & Mary cranked down its defense and held the Blue Devils to only one shot while the Tribe posted four. In the two overtime periods, Duke outshot William & Mary, 4-1.
For the game, Duke finished with a 16-6 shot advantage and 10 shots on goal. In the net for the Blue Devils, sophomore Allison Lipsher played the entire 110 minutes and finished with four saves. Duke junior Rebecca Moros finished with a team-best four shots.
“This is a frustrating loss because we dominated the game in all of the stat categories,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “We played well at times and we didn't play as well as we could at times. We are just having trouble putting the ball in the net and every team goes through spurts like this during the season. Our time is just now. We will get better from this, work out way out of it and we will become a better team.”
The Blue Devils will next travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to participate in the Nike Carolina Classic on Sept. 2, 4. Duke will take on Yale on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. and Davidson on Sept. 4 at 3:00 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
