DURHAM, N.C.- Duke Women's Tennis Head Coach Jamie Ashworth announced on Wednesday the addition of Daniela Bercek and Tara Iyer to the 2005-06 class that also includes Jessi Robinson and Melissa Mang. All four will attend Duke University in the fall and play tennis.
A product of Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro, Bercek will arrive at Duke after playing the past two seasons at UCLA where she was a two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-America in both singles and doubles. She collected a 43-16 overall singles and 57-17 doubles ledger over the two years at UCLA.
Bercek finished the 2004-05 season ranked 10th in the ITA singles rankings and fourth in doubles along with Riza Zalameda. She becomes the second player to transfer from UCLA to Duke over the last two years as Jackie Carleton also transferred in 2004. Bercek will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Blue Devils.
A native of Chevy Chase, Md., Iyer is one of the top junior players in the nation and is originally from Hyderabad, India. She represented India in the Junior Fed Cup for two years and qualified for the final playoffs in Europe both times. Iyer has registered her best Intercollegiate Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking of No. 45 and was No. 1 in the 18s in India.
Iyer has played in the junior U.S. Open, French Open and Wimbledon. She attends Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Md.
Along with Bercek and Iyer, Robinson, from Lewes, Del., and Mang, out of Metairie, La., will join a roster in 2005-06 that features two seniors--Lauren Archer and Jackie Carleton-- five juniors--Kristin Cargill, Parker Goyer, Tory Zawacki, Jennifer Zika and Bercek-- one sophomore-- Clelia Deltour-- and three freshmen.
