CLEMSON, SC - The 16th-ranked Duke women's tennis team concluded its regular season with a 5-2 loss at 14th-ranked Clemson on Sunday in Clemson, S.C. The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 14-9 overall and 5-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while The Tigers improved to 17-7 overall and 8-2 in the ACC.
"It was a tough way to end the regular season," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "We proved to ourselves a couple of things over the weekend. We had opportunities at both one and two in doubles which is a plus. We proved again that we can win six singles against anyone and were right in matches. Going into the ACC Tournament, we need to take the confidence we have now and execute in close situations. We are putting ourselves in the situation to win and we have to take advantage of it."
The Tigers captured all three doubles contests against the Blue Devils, beginning with Romy Farah and Carol Salge's 8-3 defeat of Saras Arasu and Parker Goyer at the flight three match. Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito won at flight two over Tory Zawacki and Clelia Deltour, 8-6. At flight one, the 53rd-ranked team of Julie Coin and Alix Lacelarie edged Duke's Kristin Cargill and Jackie Carleton, 8-6. The Tiger duo broke the Blue Devils' serve to take its first lead at 7-6 and then Coin served the winner.
In singles action, Clemson won four matches for the 5-2 victory margin. Salge quickly defeated Zawacki at flight five, 6-1, 6-2, while second-ranked Coin took the flight one match-up against Carleton by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Coin bettered her overall record to 31-3 and her ACC mark to 9-1 with the win.
At flight two, 80th-ranked Farah fell to Duke's Deltour, 6-4, 6-1, her first conference loss. Deltour improved to 29-10, 8-2 in league action.
Ioana Paun then clinched the match for the Tigers with a victory over Goyer in the flight six singes contest, 6-0, 7-5. Alvarez lost the first set to the Blue Devils' Cargill at flight four, 4-6, but claimed the second set, 6-4, to force a third, which she also won, 6-2, to post the win.
Duke's Arasu defeated Brito in the flight three match-up, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(10-8). Arasu improved to 99-39 overall and 5-5 in league play. She needs one more victory to become the 16th player in Blue Devil history to register 100 career wins.
The 2005 ACC Women's Tennis Tournament begins on Thursday, April 21 in Cary, NC. Clemson will likely begin defense of their title on Friday, but the match times are yet to be determined.
