EVANSTON, ILL. - After making an incredible comeback on Friday against 20th-ranked Notre Dame, the fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team couldn't make it two in a row as the Blue Devils fell, 5-2, at fourth-ranked Northwestern (9-1) on Sunday at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston Ill.
Duke (6-2) jump-started the match by taking the first doubles contest as Katie Blaszak and Saras Arasu defeated Alexis Prousis and Kristi Roemer, 8-4, at the second slot. Northwestern's top-ranked duo of Audra Cohen and Cristelle Grier responded by winning, 8-6, at the first position leaving Duke's Parker Goyer and Clelia Deltour up against Jamie Peisel and Valerie Vladea to decide who won the elusive doubles point. The Wildcats were able to take down the Blue Devils, 8-5, to win the doubles point.
In singles action, Northwestern carried the momentum they had from winning the doubles point and won three singles matches in straight sets to clinch the victory for the Wildcats. Deltour, Duke's lone freshman from Savigny sur Orge, France, couldn't get anything going against 49th-ranked Prousis and lost, 6-1, 6-1, at the third position. Arasu then fell, 6-2, 6-2, to Northwestern's Vladea at the fourth slot and 115th-ranked Blaszak lost her first dual match of the season, 6-4, 6-2, to top-ranked Cohen, at No. 1.
Once the match was clinched, the Blue Devils picked up a 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (10-4) win at the fifth position as Cargill knocked off Peisel. A native of Atlanta, Ga., Cargill improved to 6-1 on the season in dual match action. Then at the second position 108th-ranked Zika fell in a tough battle against fourth-ranked Grier, 7-6, 7-5.
Sophomore Tory Zawacki earned Duke's second point as she closed out the match with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Feriel Esseghir at No. 6.
Duke played their third consecutive match without 56th-ranked Jackie Carleton, who is out with severe tendinitis in her right foot. The Blue Devils will next travel to Virginia Tech on Feb. 24 as Duke will open Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play at 2:30 p.m.
