DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women's tennis team was one of 16 teams selected to participate in the 2006 National Team Indoor Championships, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced this week. Wisconsin will host the event, as it has done every year since the tournament was started in 1988, at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium Feb. 2-5.
Making its 17th appearance, Duke will join Baylor, Brigham Young, California, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Kentucky, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, Northwestern, Stanford, TCU, Texas , Vanderbilt and Wisconsin in the indoor championships.
In 2003, Duke became just the fourth team in the history of the tournament to win the indoor championship title. Stanford holds eight titles, while Florida has six and Georgia three. The Blue Devils made appearances in the championship match in 1998, 1999 and 2003 and went on to advance to the NCAA final four in the spring of each of those years.
Duke will compete three times before the National Indoor Championships. After starting the spring season off with the Freeman Invitational in Las Vegas Jan. 13-15, the Blue Devils will head to Tennessee Jan. 22 and Indiana Jan. 29.
