With its 97-68 victory over No. 2 Texas Saturday, Duke improves to 9-0 on the season while Texas falls to 8-1. Duke improves to 3-0 over ranked teams in 2005-06 and 3-0 in the series with Texas and 19-4 over Big 12 teams.
Duke improves to 3-3 in No. 1 vs. No. 2 contests and 3-2 as the No. 1 team over a No. 2 team. The game marked the 37th in the history of the AP poll matching-up a No. 1 vs. No. 2 team and No. 1 holds a 20-17 advantage.
The game marked the biggest win a No. 1 team has ever had over a No. 2 team, and is the third highest in the No. 1 vs. No. 2 series. No. 2 Kentucky defeated No. 1 St. John's on Dec. 17, 1951 while No. 2 UCLA defeated No. 1 Houston 101-69 on March 22, 1968.
Duke's J.J. Redick scored a career-high 41 points in the contest, tied for the sixth-most in Duke history. He became the seventh Duke player in history to score 40 or more in a game. Redick hit 13-of-24 from the field including 9-of-16 from three and 6-of-6 from the field.
His nine three pointers ties the Duke record set by Shane Battier vs. Princeton on Nov. 14, 2000. The mark is also the third-best in ACC history and tied for the second-most in the NCAA this season (other teams updated through games on Dec. 5). Redick's previous career high was eight at Florida State on Jan. 22, 2005.
Redick's nine three-pointers pushes his career total to 350 and he became Duke's all-time leader in that category. He passed Trajan Langdon (342) and is now third on the ACC's all-time chart. He is just one triple behind Georgia Tech's Dennis Scott and 63 behind Virginia's Curtis Staples, who holds the ACC and NCAA record with 413 career three-pointers.
Redick's point total is the most since Danny Ferry scored a school record 58 at Miami exactly 17 years ago on Dec. 10, 1988. It is also the second-highest point-total at Duke under Coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Redick's point total is tied for the third-highest in the NCAA this season (other teams updated through games played on Dec. 5, 2005). Gonzaga's Adam Morrison has scored 43 twice (vs. Michigan State, Nov. 22 and vs. Washingon, Dec. 4) while Lamar's Alan Daniels scored 41 against Memphis on No. 28.
Redick's career point total now stands at 2,029 as he became the ninth player in Duke history to record 2,000 points in a career. He also pass Jim Spanarkel and moved into eight place on the Duke scoring chart. Immediately ahead are Gene Banks and Jason Williams who each scored 2,079 in their respective Duke careers.
Redick's 16 three-point field goal attempts is a new career high and ties the second-most in Duke history. Jason Williams went 8-of-16 vs. Temple on Dec. 2, 2000, while Battier was 9-of-18 vs. Princeton on Nov. 14, 2000. Redick's previous high was 15 vs. Georgia Tech on Feb. 5, 2005.
Redick scored in double figures for the ninth time this season and 95th of his career. Duke has won all nine games this season and holds an 80-15 mark when Redick scores in double figures. The game also marked Redick's fifth 20-point game of 2005-06 and 47th of his career and his second 30-point game in 2005-06 and eighth of his career. Duke is 7-1 in Redick's career when he scores 30 or more points.
Shelden Williams scored 23 points and had six rebounds and five blocked shots. It marks his eighth game in double figures for points and sixth 20-point performance of the season. In his career, Duke is 64-11 when he scores in double figures and 16-3 when he scores 20 points.
Williams now has 1,422 career points and moves past Mike Lewis into 28th place on the Duke career chart. Immediately ahead in 26th place are Chris Carrawell and Vince Taylor who both scored 1,455 points in their respective Duke careers.
Williams now has 959 career rebounds and moves past Ronnie Mayer into seventh on the Duke career chart. Immediately ahead in sixth place is Gene Banks with 985.
Williams five blocks gives him 318 in his career and he remains in second place behind Mike Gminski (345) on the Duke career chart. It marked the 24th game in Williams' career he has had five or more blocks and fourth of 2005-06, the most in Duke history. Duke is 21-3 when Williams has five or more blocks.
Redick and Williams combined for 64 points which marks the third-highest point total for a duo in Duke history. Alaa Abdelnaby scored 17 against Miami on Dec. 10, 1988, to give himself and Ferry a combined 75 points. Joe Belmont (37) and Ronnie Mayer (32) combined for 69 points against Penn on Dec. 16, 1955, while Dick Groat (40) and Bernie Janacki (24) also combined for 64 against South Carolina on Feb. 23, 1952. Groat and Janacki's game against the Gamecocks is the only other in Duke history that featured a 40 point scorer and a 20 point scorer in the same game. Note that four other players in the Dec. 10, 1988, game scored six or more points and would combine for 64 or more as a duo.
Duke's 97 points is a season high.
Duke hit 23-of-24 free throws for a .958 percentage. That mark is the fifth best in school history behind three perfect performances and a 25-of-26 performance against South Carolina on Dec. 16, 1963.
Duke improved its record to 17-1 at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. Duke has won 10 straight there.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski improves to 730-246 overall and 657-187 at Duke.
Duke improves to 224-233 vs. ranked teams all-time, including a 145-103 mark under Coach K and a 58-24 record since 1997-98. Duke improves to 23-9 when both teams are ranked in the Top 10 and 18-11 under Coach K when both teams are ranked in the top five.
