CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Duke wrestling team posted eight top-five finishes at The Citadel Open on Saturday, highlighted by freshman Michael Degli Obizzi's first-place finish in the 133-pound weight class.
Degli Obizzi overcame a sprained ankle in the final match to capture his first-place finish. “Michael wrestled very well and won a talent-laden weight class,” stated Duke Head Coach Clar Anderson. “What impressed me the most was that he fought back after an ankle sprain and dominated his opponent in the finals.”
The Blue Devils received second-place finishes from sophomore Turner Rooney in the 174-pound weight class and freshman Addison Nuding at 157 pounds. Rooney advanced to the finals by winning his semi-final match in overtime before forfeiting in the final round due to a cut on his head that required 14 stitches.
Freshman Cameron Harms placed third at 157 pounds, while sophomore Aaron Glover finished third at 165 pounds. Glover narrowly missed the final round after losing his semi-final bout on a controversial stalling call.
Freshman John Barone captured third place at 184 pounds, defeating sophomore teammate Dan Fox. Freshman Wade Van Sickle capped off the impressive tournament for the Blue Devils, finishing fourth in the heavyweight division.
The Duke wrestling team will compete in the UNC Pembroke Open on Friday before heading to the SoCon-ACC Duals on Sunday.
