No. 1 Duke Handles Arkansas State, Advances To Duke Classic Championship

DURHAM, N.C. - All 11 Blue Devils scored while Laura Kurz and Lindsey Harding each had a game-high 19 points as the Duke women's basketball team (4-0) defeated Arkansas State (2-1) 110-56 Saturday afternoon here at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Monique Currie had five points in the first four minutes as Duke opened up an early 14-4 lead by the first media timeout. Arkansas State's Rudy Sims hit a three-pointer before Duke would go on a 12-0 run to make the score 26-7 with 11:30 left in the first half. Freshman Carrem Gay scored six straight points in the run.

Kurz would hit a three-pointer to give Duke its first 20 point lead at 33-13 and a late first-half 15-0 run would give Duke a 55-19 lead as Duke held a 57-25 lead at the break. Harding scored nine points in the run for Duke.

Arkansas State held the Duke lead near 30 for the first part of the second half but after two layups from Gay and a pair of free throws from Kurz, Duke pushed the lead to 38 at 74-36 at the 12:00 mark of the second half.

Kurz scored 10 points in the final 5:30 of the game as Duke outscored Arkansas State 23-6 in that span, including a game-ending 8-0 run over the game's final two minutes.

Gay finished the game with 14 points and was joined by Kurz, Harding, Mistie Williams (14 points, eight rebounds) and Chante Black (10 points, seven rebounds) as five Blue Devils reached double figure point totals.

Emily Waner and Abby Waner each added eight points and Abby Waner added five rebounds, five assists and four steals in the contest. Alison Bales pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and added five blocks as Duke again reached double figures in both blocks and steals in the contest. Black added three blocks for Duke while Gay joined Abby Waner with four steals.

Wanisha Smith distributed the ball well, finishing the game with eight assists.

Duke hit on 45-of-66 field goals in the game for a school-record 68.2 mark while holding Arkansas State to just 16-of-56 from the field (.286). Duke also dominated the paint, outscoring ASU 62-12.

Next up for Duke is the 2005 Duke Classic Championship game where it will face Auburn Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Auburn handed George Mason a 77-36 loss in the first game Saturday afternoon. George Mason and Arkansas State will tipoff at 1 p.m. ET in the consolation game.
