Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors Quotes
On What Duke Needs To Work On
“We still have several things to work on. We worked on our zone a little bit and we will continue to work on that because I didn't feel like it was very effective. I give Fairfield credit. I felt they continued to battle throughout the game.”
On Changing The Starting Lineup From Game To Game
“We talked to the players before the season about the fact that we were going to use many different starting lineups and we didn't want them to focus too much on who started. We have felt good about Abby (Waner) starting and Chante (Black) starting, but this game we felt we'd give Wanisha (Smith) and Ali (Bales) a look because they've been very productive as well. I think that it's nice that we can look at some different combinations together. There are a lot of benefits. For me, the number one benefit is that the players compete in practice every single day because they know that starting spots are always open, so we have more competitive practices. Regardless of who is starting, we have good experience coming off the bench and they've had experience starting as well. I think that it's a win-win situation for us.”
On Duke's Slow Start To Open The Game
“I thought that we'd be ready to go. We've had some good practices and I thought that we were a little sluggish to start with. I thought that when Abby [Waner] came in she gave us some really great energy on the floor. I thought once we got going, we were pretty good. The same thing happened in the second half; I thought it just took us a while to get going.”
On Duke's Depth
“That's the strength of our team; we have such quality depth. You know some teams are deep but our depth is very high quality and very productive. It's a nice luxury to have as a coach.”
Duke Player Quotes
Senior Monique Currie
On Duke's Big First-Half Run
“I think that once we get going, we get going. Sometimes we get a little too excited, but for the most part, once we get over that hump, in the beginning, I think we do a good job of attacking other teams.”
On Abby Waner
“I'm impressed. I already knew what she could do and that she was a huge addition to this team and she'll help us a lot throughout the season. We definitely need someone like her on the team who goes after it all the time and her energy rubs off on the rest of us and helps us to get up and play aggressive like she does. She'll be something to deal with throughout the season.”
Freshman Abby Waner
On Not Starting
“I don't really see it as an issue. The way that I see it, any of the thirteen players could start. The good thing about that is whether you're looking at me, Wanisha (Smith), Lindsey (Harding), or any of the guards; we'll be each other's biggest supporters. It's like Coach said, we'll just push each other in practice, its great competition, and it makes us better every day.”
