DURHAM, N.C. ? Abby Waner, the preseason ACC Rookie of the Year, opened her collegiate career over the weekend leading No. 1 ranked Duke to victories at Penn State and Old Dominion. For her efforts, Waner was named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Rookie of the Week on Monday after averaging 16.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals in the road wins.
Waner, a native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., became the eighth freshman under Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors to start her first collegiate game on Friday, helping the top-ranked Blue Devils to a 93-67 win over Penn State. The 5-10 guard scored 15 points to go along with six steals and six assists, all game highs, helping Duke snap the Nittany Lions' 20-game home winning streak. She hit three of her five three-point tries in her collegiate debut.
She followed up her first game with another very impressive showing in Duke's 93-56 win over Old Dominion on Sunday. Waner shot a sizzling 77.8 percent from the field as she hit 7-of-9 attempts, scoring a game-high 17 points. She went 2-for-4 from three-point range and played just 19 minutes in the contest.
For the week, Waner went 12-for-19 from the field, which was a whopping 63.2 percent, including a 5-for-9 effort from beyond the arc. Maryland's Shay Doron was also named ACC Player of the Week on Monday.
Duke will next host Fairfield on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium for the 2005-06 home opener.
