
Stokke and Walter Prepare for ITA National Indoor Championships

Durham, N.C. - Jonathan Stokke and Ludovic Walter will head to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Thursday.
Stokke will take on Boise State's Luke Shields, the 13th ranked player in the country, in the first round on Thursday. Stokke earned a spot in the field of 32 by winning a share of the 2005 Wilson ITA Mideast Regional on Oct. 23. He won five matches in the tournament to advance to the finals against Martin Sayer of Radford. The finals match was not play as an agreement between the two coaches, giving each player the sinles regional title.
Coming in to the season, Stokke was ranked 53rd in the preseason ITA singles rankings. He started the season with two wins at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. He lost in the quarterfinal round to Georgia's John Isner, the fourth ranked player in the country. Stokke also won two matches in the qualifying round of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla. before falling to No. 116 Juan Pablo DiCesare of Mississippi. He lost in the first round of the main draw to No. 19 Devin Mullings of Ohio State. In his last tournament, two of his five victories came against ranked opponents. He is now 11-4 on the season in singles competition.
Walter will square off against Brandon Wai of Yale in the first round of the indoor championships. Wai was ranked 51st in the nation in the ITA preseason rankings. Walter earned an at large bid in the tournament with his No. 2 preseason ranking. He won three sets before losing in the quarterfinal round to Radford's Sayer in three sets.
So far in the fall, Walter is 5-3 in singles play. He won his first match at the Southern Intercollegiates but lost in the round of 16 to No. 86 Strahinja Bobusic of Georgia. Walter also went 1-1 at the ITA All-American Tournament, losing to Stanford's Matt Bruch, who was ranked 104th as a freshman this season. Bruch is the eighth seed in the tournament this week. Walter's victory in the round of 16 at the Mideast Regionals gave him 100 career wins. He is only the ninth player in Duke history to achieve the milestone. He is one win shy of tying Doug Root for eighth on the all-time list with 101 career singles wins. The Blue Devils' current assistant coach, Ramsey Smith, holds the school record with 119 victories.
The indoor championships will take place at the Racquet Club of Columbus. Ohio State is hosting the tournament for the first time. The first round of singles will begin on Thursday. Two rounds will be played on Friday with the semifinals to take place on Saturday and the finals on Sunday.
