DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke men's basketball team played its annual Blue-White Scrimmage on Saturday, October 22, at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Playing two 15-minute halves with different lineups, the game featured strong offensive performances from its veterans, notably seniors J.J. Redick (27 points), Sean Dockery (22) and Lee Melchionni (20).
In the first game, Duke's White team that consisted of Redick, Dockery, senior Shelden Williams, freshman Josh McRoberts and sophomore DeMarcus Nelson dominated play over the final four minutes to win, 47-24. After leading 23-18 with 4:18 remaining, the White squad went on a 24-6 run to end the game.
Redick dropped in a game-best 17 points on 4-of-5 shooting (3-for-4 from three-point range), while Dockery netted 10 and had a game-high four assists. McRoberts and Williams each had team-high six rebounds to lead the White, which shot .583 from the field, .833 from three-point range and .824 from the foul line.
The Blue team was led by Melchionni, who had seven points, and freshman Eric Boateng, who had six points and a team-best six rebounds.
In the second game, Duke's White squad again prevailed, this time by a 38-30 score behind Melchionni, Nelson, Williams, Redick, freshman Greg Paulus and senior Patrick Johnson. Melchionni led all scorers with 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting (3-for-4 from three-point range). Nelson chipped in 11 points and Redick had 10 for the White, which never trailed and led by as much as 18 points. Redick had a team-best four assists. Again, the White team shot well, connecting on 50 percent of its shots from the floor (9-of-18). It also got the foul line consistently and connected on 15-of-21 (.714) of its free throw attempts.
The Blue team was led by Dockery's 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
“It was really good for us to get out,” said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. “It's really like our eighth practice. I thought that all the kids were excited to play, and it's good to see, especially the freshmen, in front of a crowd. It seemed like all five of them were pretty excited, and they all did some good things. There wasn't any nervousness or anything like that. I was pleased.”
The Blue Devils' exhibition season begins on November 3 vs. Concordia (Canada) at 7:00 PM. Duke opens the 2005-06 regular season with a November 14 home game vs. Boston University at 7:30 PM. That contest will be televised on espn2 as part of the opening round of the Preseason National Invitation Tournament.
