Durham, N.C. - Stefan Rozycki won two matches on Wednesday in the qualifying rounds of the 2005 Wilson ITA Mideast Regionals to advance to the main draw rounds.
Rozycki started the day with a straight set victory to move on to the second round. He defeated Thiago Barbosa of Winthrop 6-3, 6-4. He advanced to the next round where he faced Juan Carlo Vazquez of American. Vazquez also won his first match in straight sets, defeating Marco Herrera of Hampton 6-2, 6-2.
“It took me awhile to get in to it in the first match,” said Rozycki. “My strength is my backhand and for some reason it wasn't working today so I had to rely more on my forehand to get me through the match.”
In the second round match, Rozycki cruised to another victory with a straight set decision 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the main draw on Thursday.
The main draw rounds begin on Thursday with two rounds of singles and the first round of doubles. Duke has seven players who were automatically qualified for the main draw. Joey Atas, Christopher Brown, Peter Rodrigues, Ned Samuelson, Jonathan Stokke, Alex Stone and Ludovic Walter will all play their first matches of the tournament on Thursday.
The Blue Devils will also have three doubles teams competing. Atas and Stokke earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament while Rodrigues and Walter received the fourth seed.
The tournament is taking place at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. and the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
