DURHAM, N.C. -- Ten Blue Devil tennis players head to Chapel Hill this weekend to compete in the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Women's Regional Championships, held Oct. 13-17, at North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The regional singles finalists and doubles champions will automatically qualify for the ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 3-6 at Ohio State University.
Senior Lauren Archer and junior Parker Goyer begin action for Duke Thursday. Both players will compete in the qualifying singles draw with matches at 9:30 a.m. Goyer will match up with Charlotte's Kathy Robey, while Archer battles Kentucky's Caroline Winebrenner.
Duke will head into Friday's main draw with four singles players seeded among the top nine and two doubles teams among the top eight. As the 11th-ranked pair in the country, Junior UCLA transfer Daniela Bercek and freshman Jessi Robinson earned the top seed in the doubles bracket. The duo advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Tournament last weekend.
Seeded for the Blue Devils in singles are senior Jackie Carleton, fourth, sophomore Clelia Deltour, fifth, Robinson, tied ninth, and junior Jennifer Zika, tied ninth. In the doubles bracket, the team of juniorKristin Cargill and Carleton are listed at No. 6. Freshmen Melissa Mang and Tara Iyer will also compete in the singles main draw, and Mang will team up with Zika in the doubles main draw.
Duke is coming off a strong showing at the All-American Tournament, where six Blue Devils competed. Fifth-ranked Bercek won every set through four straight matches to advance to the main draw championship match, and the duo of Bercek and Robinson made it to the quarterfinal round.
Blue Devil action at the regional championships will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday for qualifying singles and 8 a.m. for the singles main draw. The doubles main draw will begin Friday with times not yet determined.
Eight regional championships are being held throughout the country during the month of October with the winners advancing to the national indoor championships, the second of three national tournaments during the year. The All-American Tournament was the first of these three, and the NCAA Championships in the spring will round out the national competition.
