WAIPIO, HAWAII - The 24th-ranked Duke women's soccer team improved to 3-2 overall on the 2004 season with a 2-0 victory over the University of Hawaii (3-2-1) on Friday evening in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic in Waipio, Hawaii. In her return home, freshman goalkeeper Allison Lipsher netted her second career shutout on the evening.
"I thought we played really well tonight," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "I thought we came out and played well early, but then Hawaii took over for a 10-minute stretch in the first half. Then, we were able to add a goal late in the half, which was huge."
It took a while for the Blue Devils to get into the contest and didn't have their first true opportunity to score until the 24:39 mark in the first half as sophomore Rebecca Moros streaked up the right side and had a clear shot at the goal but the ball soared right off her foot.
Then, less than a minute later freshman Lorraine Quinn sent in a cross from the left side which settled in front of the goal but the Blue Devils could not get a foot on it before Hawaii goalkeeper Mahie Atay grabbed it. Atay ended up getting hit on the play and suffered a concussion, but stayed in the game.
The Blue Devils finally got on the board in the 42nd minute as sophomore Darby Kroyer took a shot which was blocked by Atay, but junior Carolyn Riggs was there to take another shot that was blocked by Atay once again. The ball settled on the right side of the goal where junior Shelly Marshall was in the right place at the right time to collect her first goal of the season, as she put the ball in the corner of the net. The goal for Marshall, an Arcadia, Calif., product, was the fourth of her career.
"Anytime you score a goal late in the half, it gives you a huge lift and that is what it did for us tonight," said Church. "I thought we played really well in the second half and were a little unlucky to not score a couple more goals. Hawaii is a very good team and I think they are a NCAA Tournament team down the road, so it was a quality win for us."
At the end of the first half, the Blue Devils led 1-0 and held an 8-6 shot advantage.
Duke came out firing in the second half as Kroyer blasted a free kick just six minutes into the stanza that deflected off new Hawaii goalkeeper Erin Chow, hit the crossbar and the ball went out of bounds. The Blue Devils had another great scoring opportunity in the 61st minute as junior Carmen Bognanno sent a great feed down the right side to Riggs who sent a cross to sophomore Lauren Tippets. Tippets, a Menlo Park, Calif., native, sent a rocket at the goal which went just off to the right.
The Blue Devils were able to increase their lead to 2-0 at the 76:52 mark as junior Kate Seibert dribbled the ball 35 yards down the middle of the field and sent a perfect pass through defenders to sophomore Sarah McCabe, who was able to beat her defender and hit the right side of the net for her third goal of the season.
Lipsher, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, finished the night with one save and continued her streak of not allowing a goal in the state of Hawaii to over a year. For the game, Duke outshot Hawaii by a 17-7 ledger. Duke also held the reigning two-time WAC Player of the Year, Natasha Kai to four shots, none of where were on goal.
"This was a great win for us and it was a lot of fun being able to come back home and play in front of my family," said Lipsher.
The Blue Devils will next take on Long Beach State (3-0-1) on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. (EST), 7:00 p.m. (Hawaiian). The match will take place at the Waipio Penninsula Soccer Stadium in Waipio, Hawaii.
