DURHAM, N.C.-- Former Duke University women's tennis All-America Kelly McCain received a main draw women's singles wild card entry into the 2004 U.S. Open Tennis Championship, which will be played Aug. 30 - Sept. 12 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. McCain, a native of Tampa, Fla., is currently ranked No. 135 on the WTA Tour and turned professional last summer after her sophomore season at Duke. In her WTA Tour debut in April, she upset 57th-ranked Arantxa Parra before losing to Serena Williams in Charleston. This summer, McCain made her Grand Slam debut as a qualifier at Roland Garros and also qualified at the WTA Tour event in Birmingham, upsetting 46th-ranked Tina Pisnik in the first round. To begin the year, McCain won the USTA Pro Circuit $10,000 event in Boca Raton, Fla., her third professional title. McCain was a two-time All-America, 2003 ACC Player of the Year and 2002 ACC Rookie of the Year for the Blue Devils from 2001 through 2003. She led Duke to the 2003 NCAA Final Four and won the 2003 Riviera All-American singles title. Ansley Cargill, an All-America at Duke in 2001, will compete in singles qualifying and will also play in the main draw of doubles at the U.S. Open. Cargill owns a career-best ranking of 90 in singles and is currently ranked 69th in doubles on the WTA Tour. - d - u - k - e -
