DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University rising junior Liz Janangelo has been named the Golfweek College Player of the Year for the 2003-04 campaign, becoming the first Blue Devil to earn the annual award.
A West Hartford, Conn., product, Janangelo concluded the season with the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA), the Golfstat Cup and the Golfweek National Player of the Year awards.
Janangelo earned these honors after posting a school-record 71.10 stroke average, four tournament victories and 19 rounds of even or under par in 10 tournaments. She led the Blue Devils to a school-record 10 victories, a No. 1 national ranking the entire season and a third place finish at the NCAA Championship.
The two-time first-team NGCA All-America selection set new Duke records for lowest 18-hole score (65-tie) and 36-hole score (134), while crushing the single-season record for scoring average. Out of 10 tournaments played, Janangelo had nine top-five and 10 top-20 finishes.
For most of the season, Janangelo occupied the top spot in the Golfweek/Sagarin College rankings and remained there after the NCAA Championship. Her scoring average of 71.1 led the nation by a half-shot and only 24 players finished better than Janangelo in 10 events.
