COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The third-ranked Duke women's tennis team crushed the Maryland Terrapins, 7-0, on Saturday in College Park, Md., to improve to 14-1 overall, 5-0 in the ACC. The Blue Devils won their 13th straight match of the season.
Duke jumped out to a quick lead as the Blue Devils won the coveted doubles point to take a 1-0 advantage. The No. 1 Duke duo of Tory Zawacki and Julia Smith knocked off Ramona Butt and Brooke Rogers, 8-4, Saras Arasu and Amanda Johnson defeated Chloe Chavardes and Jennifer Dent, 8-2, at No. 2 and Kristin Cargill and Jennifer Zika of Duke cruised to an 8-2 win over Marianne Baker and Neda Mihneva at the third slot.
The Blue Devils continued with their dominating play in singles action as four different players won quick two-set matches. At the top position, seventh-ranked Johnson defeated But, 6-4, 6-1, Smith won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Masha Senic at No. 4, 93rd-ranked Arasu knocked off Mihneva, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 and Cargill won 6-3, 6-1 over Charvardes at the sixth position.
Other Blue Devils collecting wins were 89th-ranked Zika with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Dent at the second slot and Zawacki at the third position with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over Baker.
Duke increased its ACC regular season win streak to 33 games. The Blue Devils will travel to Virginia on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
