CLEMMONS, N.C.- After round one of the 2004 ACC Women's Golf Championship, top-ranked Duke leads by six shots as the Blue Devils carded a five-under-par round of 279 on Friday at the Par 71, 6,348-yard Salem Glen Golf and Country Club in Clemmons, N.C.
The Blue Devils lead North Carolina (285), Wake Forest (290), Florida State (293), North Carolina State (303), Maryland (306) and Virginia (307).
In the individual race, Duke freshman Brittany Lang is one stroke off the lead after posting a four-under-par round of 67 on day one. Lang, a product of McKinney, Texas, registered six birdies on the day and made the turn four-under-par. Reigning ACC Champion, Meaghan Francella of North Carolina leads the race with a 66.
The 2001 ACC Champion, Virada Nirapathpongporn posted a one-under-par score of 70 on Friday and is tied for fourth. The Bangkok, Thailand native had four birdies on the day, which was third-best in round one.
Duke senior Leigh Anne Hardin and freshman Anna Grzebien each posted rounds of even-par 71 on the day and is tied for sixth overall. Sophomore Liz Janangelo was three-under-par at one point on the day, but a four-over-par final eight holes dropped her the West Hartford, Conn., to a two-over-par 73 and is tied for 13th.
Duke will tee off round two of three on Saturday with North Carolina and Wake Forest at 9:10 a.m. The Blue Devils are in search of their ninth-straight ACC Championship.
