DURHAM, N.C.- The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team collected a 6-1 victory over 39th-ranked Georgia Tech on Saturday at the Ambler Tennis Stadium and needs one more victory to close out the regular season with a perfect league mark. The Blue Devils improved to 17-2, 7-0 in the ACC, while Georgia Tech fell to 11-8, 4-4.
Duke jumped out to an early lead as the Blue Devils swept all three doubles matches to go up 1-0. At the second slot, Duke's Saras Arasu and Amanda Johnson teamed to cruise to an 8-3 win over Maria Neito and Lindsay Shosho.
Then, the Blue Devil duo of Katie Blaszak and Jennifer Zika downed Alison Siverio and Kalie Anson, 8-4, while Julia Smith and Tory Zawacki pulled out a 9-7 win over Kelly Anderson and Sekita Grant, at the third and first positions, respectively. It was the first action of the year for Blaszak, who had missed the entire season due to shoulder surgery.
Johnson, a ninth-ranked senior native of Bettendorf, Iowa, continued her hot play of late in singles as she crushed 57th-ranked Shosho, 6-1, 6-0, to give Duke a 2-0 advantage. The match less than 45 minutes to finish.
Georgia Tech got on the board next as 72nd-ranked Anderson knocked off 92nd-ranked Zika from Duke, 6-4, 6-2.
Duke responded by winning at the fourth and fifth positions within less than five minutes of each other to clinch the match for the Blue Devils. At No. 4, Smith defeated Silverio, 6-3, 6-4, and 110th-ranked Arasu notched a 7-5, 6-2 win over Grant to give Duke a 4-2 lead.
In the other two matches, Duke freshman Kristin Cargill lost the first set at the sixth slot 6-1 and was down 5-2 in the second set before making an excellent comeback to win the second, 7-5. Then in a third set tiebreaker, Cargill won 10-4 over Neito. At the third position, Zawacki pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 win over Stauss.
