ATHENS, GA.-Although the top-ranked Duke women's golf team is playing with only four golfers, the Blue Devils are tied for second and only one stroke off the lead after day one of the Liz Murphey Collegiate in Athens, Ga.
Freshman Brittany Lang carded a tournament-best round of 66 on Friday and leads the individual competition by two strokes. Leading the team action is Ohio State (291), while Duke (292) and Georgia (292) are tied for second. Rounding out the top 10 includes Auburn (293), Michigan State (297), Oklahoma State (300), East Carolina (301), Wake Forest (302), Tennessee (304), Florida State (305), Mississippi State (305) and Mississippi (305).
Lang made the turn five-under-par and then finished the final nine one-under-par to finish with a career-best round of 66.
Duke's other freshman, Anna Grzebien also posted an under-par round on the day as she fired a 71 and is seventh, while Leigh Anne Hardin is tied for 34th with a 76 and junior Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh is tied for 62nd with a 79.
The Blue Devils have 36 holes remaining with 18 being played on Saturday at the Par 72, 6,014-Yard University of Georgia Golf Club. Duke is in search of its eighth straight tournament victory.
