Duke swimmer Katie Ness ended the first day of competition at the 2004 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Texas A&M University. Ness, one of 69 swimmers in the 200-meter IM, finished tied for 18th in the preliminaries held Thursday morning.
The sophomore from Worthington, Ohio, notched a time of 2:14.13 in the 200 IM, barely missing the cut for tonight's finals. The top eight swimmers advance to the overall finals, while the next eight performers qualify for the consolation finals.
Ness will continue her performance at this year's championships tomorrow, as she takes part in the 100 butterfly. Preliminaries are slated to begin at 11:00 a.m., while the finals are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
