WAIKOLOA, HAWAII-- On Friday, the sixth-ranked Duke women's tennis team completed its two-match spring break trip with a 4-0 victory over 36th-ranked Tennessee at the Hilton Waikoloa in Waikoloa, Hawaii. The victory for the Blue Devils (8-1) is their seventh straight win, while Tennessee falls to 8-8.
The match was called after Duke captured four points to clinch the victory due to the 100-degree weather in Hawaii.
Duke won its second straight doubles point for the first time this season as the Blue Devils won at the top two positions. Tory Zawacki and Julia Smith teamed to knock off Tammy Encina and Melissa Schaub, 8-0, at No. 1, while Amanda Johnson and Saras Arasu defeated Ashley Robards and Sabita Maharaj, 8-3. Before the No. 3 doubles match was abandoned, Duke's Jennifer Zika and Kristin Cargill were leading Breanna Kray and Majen Immink, 6-3.
The Blue Devils began where they left off in singles action as Zawacki, a freshman from Union, N.J., won her seventh straight singles match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Robards at the third slot. Smith, a native of Windlesham, England, gave Duke a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Blakeley Griffith at No. 4 and then fifth-ranked Johnson cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Encina at No. 4 to clinch the team win for Duke, 4-0.
In the other three singles matches, Duke was leading all three before being abandoned.
The Blue Devils will next return home for a three-match homestand with the first match coming on March 18 at 4:00 p.m. against Yale.
