Blue Devils Top Maryland, 25-9, But Fall To Rutgers In Dual Meet Action

The Duke University wrestling team moved to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the ACC by splitting a pair of duals in College Park, Md. on Saturday. The Blue Devils topped Maryland 25-9 in their first match of the day, before falling to Rutgers, 28-6.
Duke jumped out to an early 6-0 lead against the Terrapins as Christian Smith and Adam Benitez scored victories. Smith moved to 23-11 on the year with a 5-4 decision against Matt Pandullo, while Benitez won for the fourth straight time with a 5-2 decision against Mike Lupa.
After a Maryland win at 141-lbs., the Blue Devils ripped off six consecutive victories. Andy Soliman scored a 12-7 decision at 149-lbs. and Brandon Foose returned from injury to post a 8-3 decision at 157-lbs. Senior Michael Mitchell extended Duke's lead to 15-3 with his 18th win of the year, topping John Antonelli, 10-3.
At 174-lbs., Levi Craig earned a 6-3 decision over Pat Cissne for an 18-3 Blue Devil advantage. Senior Frank Cornely then scored a 12-4 major decision victory and Tim Marcantonio beat Jerry Afari, 11-7, to create a 25-3 Duke lead heading into the final match of the meet. Maryland's Barry Stein went on to pin Patrick Keenum in just under four minutes for a final of 25-9 in favor of the Blue Devils.
In the second meet of the day, Duke dropped several close matches in a 28-6 loss to Rutgers. Benitez registered an 11-9 decision over Dare Ajibade at 133-lbs. and Mitchell topped Chris Resse, 3-1, in overtime for the Blue Devils' lone wins. Mitchell is now tied for seventh all-time at Duke with 85 career victories.
