Freshman Christian Smith was selected as the ACC Wrestler of the Week after posting a 2-0 record in dual meet action at 125 pounds, including a key conference victory. The Blue Devils went 1-1 this past week earning a win over Virginia to move atop the ACC standings with a record of 3-0. The three wins in ACC action this season mark the first time since 1960, Duke has won three ACC matches.
The Chesapeake, Va., native helped Duke overcome a 14-0 deficit against the Cavaliers as Smith posted a 7-4 decision over Virginia's Brian Sticca to give the Blue Devils the an 18-17 lead in a 21-17 win over Virginia. Smith jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the second period registering an escape, a takedown and two back points before holding off a late charge by Sticca.
Smith also earned a victory over UNC-Greensboro's Kyle Terrell, pinning the Spartan in a minute and 58 seconds. With the two wins, Smith improves to 25-12 overall, 10-3 in dual match play and 3-0 in ACC action this season.
Duke will next travel to Campbell for their lone match of the week on Wednesday, February 18.
