Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors
On their performance:
"I am very disappointed with our effort. We played very poor defense in this game. I am not sure if it is because of the Christmas break, but that is something that we are going to have to improve on if we intend to beat Auburn."
On their leading scorers:
"Jessica Foley, (16 points), did a great job on hitting the three pointers for us. Monique Currie, (14 points), got into foul trouble early on, but she did a really good job. Mistie Williams, (14 points), worked really hard for us on the boards and did a good job."
On the bench:
"The bench gave us some good solid offense. The defense had some trouble in this game."
On Rhode Island:
"Rhode Island did a fantastic job. I give them credit. They were very tenacious and they worked hard during the entire forty minutes and never gave up. They played us even in the second half and had a good game plan."
On the break before facing Auburn:
"We have practice in the morning and then we are going to come watch Auburn play this Rhode Island team. Then we will just go from there."
Jessica Foley, Duke
"We had to get the kinks out today after having a stretch of eight days without a game. We were a little off with our passes, were not making layups and didn't play well defensively."
On her shot today: "My shot felt really good today. I worked on it over the break. I found myself wide open a number of times and was able to knock down the shots."
Mistie Williams, Duke
"Coming off a break like we had, we have to get our communication back on defense as that is what makes our defense what it is. We played a great game before heading home for Christmas [at Ball State] and it was disappointing how we came out and played on the defensive end today. It showed our lack of focus."
Rhode Island Head Coach Tom Garrick
On today's game
"I think our team bought into the myth of Duke a little too much. That
is not to say they are not great because they are, but when we came out
we played the first 20 minutes kind of shell shocked. I think that we
played too passive and did not go after it enough. I think the second
20 minutes we really picked it up and played well. The result was that
we really grow as a team. I just wish that we would have been able to
do that in the first half instead of waiting until the second half."
On tomorrow's game against Auburn:
"We are going to see the same kind of play against Auburn tomorrow.
They have as many athletes and really like to run the floor. We have to
put together a complete game tomorrow and not just play for 20-minutes.
We will just have to go out and see what we can do."
