Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski:
Opening Statement:
"We are pleased with our effort. We did a good job, played hard. We are a more talented team than they are, but they are well coached and they have a system and it spreads you out. I thought we did a nice job of defending that. Our big guys dominated. And when you have Daniel [Ewing] and J.J. [Redick] out on the court, it is very difficult to double [team] one of those big guys. And that's what we hoped; that we have that balance, inside and outside. Of course that tipped more towards the big guys tonight, but you have to pay attention to J.J. and Daniel, they still put up 30 points or more than 30 points between them. We got to work on that play when we miss a free throw and pass it, so Shelden dunks. I wish that was something I had diagrammed. I am pleased. I was really happy with McClure's play. I think he only shot it once on a tip. But he made 8-10 plays that right at the end of the half; he got a loose ball, kept it alive, that's what we need off the bench."
On the point guard situation:
"There won't be just one guy there [at point guard]. Daniel [Ewing] and J.J. [Redick] are the most mature players. They are the veterans, along with Shelden [Williams]. The more Daniel has the ball, it's good. Even when Sean [Dockery] is in there, Daniel can bring it up, or Daniel may be on the ball on defense. We are just trying to figure that out right now. Also, DeMarcus [Nelson] will be back by the first game, I'm pretty sure. He gets his stitches out this week, and he'll have a smaller device put on his hand. He'll be able to start doing some things. He won't play on Thursday exhibition, but we need to get him in that rotation and see how that looks. [Lee] Melchionni has done well too."
On the play of Shavlik Randolph and Shelden Williams:
"You have to be careful that they don't just go against Pat [Davidson] and Reggie [Love], although Pat and Reggie are doing OK. So in drill work, or sometimes when we scrimmage, we split those guys so that they get a chance to playing against one another. I was really pleased with Shelden's composure, because there was a lot of physical play, and he didn't react in any way, he didn't get any dumb fouls.
DUKE PLAYER QUOTES
Junior Shelden Williams
"We had a chance to get the ball in good positions and then we were trying to execute our plays and finish it out. Me and Shav [Randolph] got some real easy looks down low and we knew that if we got two hands on the ball, if we caught the ball, then it was basically one-on-one."
"As long as [Shavlik Randolph and I] are both out on the court, I think we can achieve [being] the best one and two big guys out on the court. Right now, we're trying to build that relationship where he knows what I'm going to do and I know what he's going to do and hopefully we can build on that."
"Any time you have size and strength as well as three-point shooting, you can have yourself a great team. Me and Shav [Randolph], we're trying to produce that and hopefully it will take us through the long haul."
Junior J.J. Redick
"I thought overall our team's performance and our effort was very good. We came ready to play tonight. I was really happy with the way the big guys played. Shelden [Williams] and Shav [Randolph] were dominant inside. Also, our bench made some great plays for us, too."
Junior Shavlik Randolph
"I think, with the exception of a few defensive lapses, for the most part we came ready to play. We had high energy. I think we played better than them. I think we competed hard. I was pleased, not satisfied, but pleased with the way me and Shelden [Williams] played. Shelden was an absolute beast and he made what I did easier out there, as far as not having to worry as much about getting rebounds because I knew if I wasn't going to get it he was going to get it. Overall, I think it was a positive exhibition game for us."
