CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- The Duke women's tennis team opened the first annual UNC Kitty Harrison Invitational on Friday with a bang winning nine of 10 singles and all three doubles contests at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Duke opened the morning winning three of four singles matches against Washington State as Jennifer Zika notched a 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory over Nora Gaal, Katie Blaszak downed Amy Toth, 6-2, 6-0, and Clelia Deltour picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Orsi Sallai. Sophomore Parker Goyer won the first set against Chris Martinez, but lost ended up losing the match 4-6, 0-1 (7-10).
The Blue Devils then went up against Minnesota and won all six singles matches. Jackie Carleton won 6-2, 6-3 over Nischela Reddy, Kristin Cargill had a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Jane Anderson, Saras Arasu posted a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Ida Malmberg, Deltour defeated Marina Bugaenco, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5), Tory Zawacki registered a 6-1, 6-0 win over Daniella Mousseau and Goyer cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Megan Steiger.
Duke closed out the day with doubles matches against Wake Forest with the Blue Devils winning all three. Zika teamed with Cargill to post an 8-5 win over Katie Martzolf and Daniella Schwartz, Zawacki and Carleton had an 8-3 win over Ashlee Davis and Jenna Loeb, while Blaszak and Arasu collected an 8-5 win over Blakely Offutt and Alisha Talbot.
The Blue Devils will only play Miami and Winthrop in doubles action on Saturday before finishing the weekend with both singles and doubles on Sunday.
