DURHAM, N.C. - Duke Women's Basketball Head Coach Gail Goestenkors announced on Wednesday that junior point guard Lindsey Harding has been suspended indefinitely from the team for violation of team rules.
"We are disappointed as Lindsey has played an important role on our squad over the last two years," said Goestenkors. "Now other players will have to step forward and take more of a responsibility. We have been through adversity before and this will only make us better in the long run."
A product of Houston, Texas, Harding has developed into one of the top point guards in the nation over the last two years, after averaging 6.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game. The 5-8 speedster also led the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in assist/turnover ratio (2.2) and started 33 of 34 contests as a sophomore. A third team All-ACC and All-ACC Defensive selection, Harding ranked in a number of ACC categories including third in assists and sixth in steals while coming two assists shy of the Duke single season record of 168.
"I apologize and feel like I let down myself, my team, my coaches and Duke University," said Harding. "I have been going through a difficult time and will do everything in my power to make it up to all of them. I appreciate the support everyone has given me."
With the loss of Harding, the Blue Devils are left with six returning letterwinners and nine eligible scholarship players. Other returning letterwinners include Monique Currie, Mistie Williams, Jessica Foley, Wynter Whitley, Alison Bales and Caitlin Howe. Duke's three freshmen, Chante Black, Laura Kurz and Wanisha Smith are all expected to see significant playing time early for the Blue Devils. Colorado transfer Emily Waner has to sit out the 2004-05 season due to NCAA rules.
The Blue Devils will play the first of two exhibition contests on Wednesday against EA Sports at 7:00 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Then, on Monday Duke will face EV1 in its final tune-up before opening the 2004-05 campaign on Nov. 12 in the Preseason WNIT against Davidson. The Blue Devils will have a very tough opening two months of the season with the Preseason WNIT, Penn State, Kansas State, Tennessee and Purdue on the schedule.
All home games are played in the historic Cameron Indoor Stadium. For ticket information, contact the Duke ticket office at 1-800-672-BLUE.
