DUKE HEAD COACH Mike Krzyzewski
Opening Statement
"I thought we played with a lot of energy tonight and the defense was good. One of the things that Greensboro does well is rebound and we did a good job on the boards against them. Obviously they're a young team that hadn't played our level of competition yet. I think that knocked them back. We had a lot of energy too. We're trying to get better. I thought Shelden [Williams] and Shav [Randolph], in particular, played with great enthusiasm and made some big hustle plays. Nobody got hurt. We played with energy, played hard, to start off this week. It's a big week for us."
On defensive pressure
"We're trying different line-ups. We think we're developing some depth. When Reggie [Love] goes in for the second big and DeMarcus [Nelson] comes in for anyone on the perimeter, and say Shelden stays in, we're fairly athletic. We just want to take a look at that. Not just at the start of the game, but when we fall behind, as I'm sure we'll fall behind in games, or when there's foul trouble, but that line-up is in. Maybe that style is more conducive to success for that group. We're just trying to take a look at that."
On Dockery's offensive effort
"We're trying to develop his role, where he has confidence in the things that he can do because he's a good player. One of them is to take the open shot. He's practiced it like crazy, he shoots a soft shot. I think he was 3-for-7, which is really good ... We rebounded a couple of his misses and we actually turned those into points, so he's got to take those shots. Just like Lee Melchionni. Every once in awhile he passes up some shots. When he's open, he's got to take the shot because Lee is really a good shooter. Sean is a really good open three-point shooter. He just has to believe that."
On offensive confidence and lack of hesitation
"We're trying to work on that. We ran more of a motion offense tonight, so people got touches. I think some of it is that we're running so many sets that a guy didn't touch the ball until he was supposed to shoot it and so he didn't have a feel for it. That's one reason that you try to run motion and get touches. J.J. [Redick] didn't get a shot off for awhile, but then he got a number of shots and that's the kind of stuff that should happen."
SENIOR FORWARD Reggie Love
"Coach wanted us to get up and try to press them because they don't really handle the press very well. We wanted to be all over the place and try to back-tap the ball and things like that. He just wanted us to have a lot of energy on the court and that's what we tried to do."
On the second half
"We were just really trying to put two good halves together. We want to make it a habit to come out and play two good consecutive halves of basketball, not just for Greensboro, but as preparation for the rest of the season."
On the team so far
"It's still early, but I think we have a lot to learn. Defensively, I think we're doing awesome. I think we're playing well offensively, too. There are plays that happen on the court, turnovers and not finishing at times, but I definitely think we're doing really well as a team."
SENIOR GUARD Daniel Ewing
"Coming off a tough win against Davidson, we kind of refocused. We just wanted to give a lot of energy to our team today and I think we brought a lot of energy to the table. We played good defense and our offense was a lot better in execution. We shot a better percentage and we were able to get the ball inside-out."
JUNIOR GUARD J.J. Redick
"We always take the most pride in defense. We're trying to hold teams to certain level of points. We don't want anybody going off on us, so we take pride in our D. For us to hold them to 44, that's just great for us."
On controlling the game for 40 minutes
"We wanted to come out tonight and attack and play with a ton of energy and I think we did that. There might have been a couple of lapses in there, but overall we did it for 40 minutes. We really want to use this game as momentum for the rest of the way."
On the team's improved level of intensity
"At times I think we attacked and showed intensity in the first two games, but overall I think there was a little sense of nervousness, maybe tentativeness, on our parts. Maybe not against Davidson, because they really played well and they're a great team. But tonight, we just wanted to come out and attack and we did that."
