LOS ANGELES, CALIF.- The 15th-ranked Duke women's soccer team had its season come to a close on Saturday as the Blue Devils fell, 2-0, to 10th-ranked and 14th-seeded UCLA in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.
Duke concludes the season with a 15-8 record, while UCLA improves to 16-6 and will next face the winner of the Tennessee versus Ohio State contest. The Blue Devils had a very successful season advancing to the Sweet 16 and were ranked as high as ninth in the nation during the year.
"UCLA physically dominated us in the first half both in the air, on the ground and going to the ball," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "Their goals showed as they fought their way through a couple of people to find the net. UCLA's hard work paid off for their lead. I am very proud of our team as we did a great job in the second half. I thought we adjusted and we laid it out on the field. We battled them tooth and nail and even had them in the second half, but we couldn't put the ball behind them and get that final ball in."
The game kicked off with Duke's junior Carmen Bognanno taking the first shot of the contest in the sixth minute of action. Then, UCLA had two scoring opportunities over the next 14 minutes of action, but Duke freshman goalkeeper Allison Lipsher was able to stop both. At the 10:38 mark, Danesha Adams connected on a shot with Lipsher making a diving stop and then at the 20:05 mark Lipsher made another diving save on a shot by Iris Mora.
UCLA was able to get on the board in the 23rd-minute as Lindsay Greco sent a perfect cross to Adams who blasted a shot into the right corner of the net, which put the Bruins up 1-0. Then, Lipsher made her third save of the match at the 29:40 mark off a shot from Kim Devine. A freshman from Honolulu, Hawaii, Lipsher added two more saves in the final two minutes of the first stanza to keep the score, 1-0, in favor of UCLA.
The first half was dominated on the offensive end by UCLA, which boasted a 10-2 shot advantage. The Bruins were called offsides five different times in the first 45 minutes of play.
Duke came out in the second half and put the pressure on the Bruins. The Blue Devils had their best scoring opportunity of the match at the 47:11 mark. Junior Carolyn Riggs sent a shot 25-yards out that just missed the right side of the goal. Blue Devil senior Casey McCluskey kept the momentum on the Duke side as she sent her second shot of the game high over the crossbar off a free kick in the 67th minute.
"The last ball was played into Riggs, but the UCLA defense closed on her really fast and she didn't get a really good shot on it as it slipped off to the right," said Church.
At the 73:00 minute, the Blue Devils switched their formation to three forwards and only three defenders to try to make a push to tie the game. Duke was able to collect a couple of shots, but UCLA had some breakaway opportunities that Lipsher was able to stop, but at the 86:12 mark Mora found a streaking Bristyn Davis. Davis settled the ball and rocketed a shot into the left corner past a diving Lipsher to give UCLA a 2-0 lead.
"I am so proud of these girls as they have been such a joy to coach both on and off the field," said Church.
It marked the third time this season the Blue Devils trailed at the half and in each of those matches, Duke lost. For the game, UCLA outshot Duke 13-7. Lipsher finished the match with seven saves.
"There really wasn't anything Alli could of done against those two goals," said Church. "She had a great year for us and is going to have an excellent career over the next three years."
Duke will lose one starter, McCluskey, and will welcome an excellent recruiting class in 2005. Church is already excited about next season and what lies ahead for the future of Duke women's soccer.
"We will be back and our goal next year will be to put us back in this type of environment as we enjoyed this," said Church. "We have some things we need to work and we are already excited about next year."
