Duke & Wake Forest To Face Off In ACC Tournament On Wednesday...
The 11th-ranked Duke women's soccer team will open the 2004 ACC Tournament on Wednesday with an 8:00 p.m. kickoff against Wake Forest at the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C. The Blue Devils are seeded fourth and enter the contest with a 12-6 overall, 5-4 league mark, while the Demon Deacons are seeded fifth and own a 10-5-1, 4-4-1 records.
The winner of the Duke/WFU match will take on the winner of the top-seeded North Carolina versus eighth-seeded Maryland match on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
In The Rankings...
Duke is ranked 11th in the latest Soccer Buzz, 15th in the SoccerTimes.com, 17th in the NSCAA and 20th in the Soccer America polls. Wake Forest is 18th in the Soccer America and Soccer Buzz rankings.
The Series...
Duke and Wake Forest have met a total of 13 times in the series history with Duke leading 9-3-1. Overall, the Blue Devils have won the past six straight matches with the Demon Deacons, dating back to 1998. In those matches, Duke has outscored Wake Forest by a 10-3 clip. In three out of the last four contests, the Blue Devils have registered shutouts over WFU.
In ACC Tournament action, the Blue Devils and Demon Deacons have met only one time back in 1997. The match was played at Spry Soccer Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. It went into overtime, after going 2-2 in regulation, with Duke pullout out a 4-3 victory in penalty kicks.
Duke In the ACC Tournament...
Duke owns an all-time record of 9-16-2 in the ACC Tournament over the 16 years. The Blue Devils have advanced to the semifinals each of the past two years and nine times in their 16 appearances. Senior Casey McCluskey has been named to the All-Tournament team each of the past two years.
The Record Book...
Duke has posted a number of school records during the season-- tied the school record with eight straight wins, had a seven straight shutouts, tied a school-record with nine goals in a game (VT), had 65 assists, had a seven goals in one half (Davidson), had 12 assists in one game (VT), had 30 points in one game (VT) and Rebecca Moros tied an ACC record with four assists against Virginia Tech.
Devilish Defense...
Duke has collected 10 shutouts this season and had a streak of seven straight during September and October. The Blue Devils allowed goals in only two of the first 11 contests, but over the last seven matches have allowed goals in six of them.
All-ACC Honors Released...
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) released the 2004 All-ACC women's soccer teams on Monday with Duke senior Casey McCluskey headlining the list earning Offensive Player of the Year and first team accolades. The Blue Devils also had sophomore Rebecca Moros earning second team honors as well as two rookies on the All-Freshman team. The teams are decided on a vote by the 10 league head coaches.
"Obviously we are very excited about Casey earning ACC Offensive Player of the Year," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "She is well-deserving of the award as from day one she has been a major part of our offense."
McCluskey, a native of Springfield, Va., has posted one of the best offensive seasons in Duke history in her final year with the Blue Devils; collecting 15 goals and five assists for 35 points. Since moving to the forward position in the fifth match of the season, McCluskey has scored 14 of her 15 goals and has posted seven of her eight game-winning goals. Her 15 goals and 35 points each rank second on the Duke single-season record charts. In the career record book, McCluskey also ranks second with 39 goals and 90 points.
In the ACC stats, McCluskey leads the league in game-winning goals (8), while ranking second in goals (15) and points (35). The honor for McCluskey marks the fourth straight year she has been named first team All-ACC. She becomes only the 15th ACC player since 1987 and second Duke player to earn the honor in four straight years. Moros, a product of Larchmont, N.Y., is having a breakout season in 2004 as she has registered 11 assists and four goals for 19 points. Her 11 assists ranks tied for second in the ACC and is tied for second on the Duke single-season record charts. Moros tied an ACC-record on Oct. 17 as the midfielder amassed four assists leading the Blue Devils to a 9-3 victory.
On the All-ACC Freshman team, Allison Lipsher and Lorraine Quinn were each named to the 12-member squad. A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Lipsher has started 14 of 18 contests for the Blue Devils registering six shutouts, seven victories and a 1.11 goals against average. Her six shutouts ranks third in the ACC and during the season Lipsher posted a Duke record 516.34 straight minutes without allowing a goal. Quinn, from Farmingdale, N.Y., has been solid in the midfield for Duke this season starting all 18 contests and notching three goals and four assists for 10 points. She posted the game-winning goal in the second match of the season against Elon.
Fab Freshmen...
Two Duke freshmen have given the Blue Devils a big boost in 2004 as Lorraine Quinn has started all 18 matches, while Allison Lipsher has started 14 of the 18 contests. Quinn has scored three goals and had four assists for 10 points on the season, while playing the midfield.
Lipsher has played in 1217.46 minutes, while allowing 15 goals for a 1.11 goals against average. She has collected six shutouts and had a string of 516.34 minutes of scoreless action during the year, which is a new school record.
Tough Losses...
On the season, Duke has lost six contests and five of the six losses have been by one goal. Heading into the ACC Tournament, Duke has lost three of its last five matches and each have been by one goal.
Since 1988, Duke owns a 74-69 record in one-goal matches.
In the National Stats...
In the latest NCAA stats, Casey McCluskey ranks 18th in goals per game (0.83), Rebecca Moros is 15th in assists (0.61), McCluskey is 22nd in points per game (1.94) and Duke ranks seventh in goals per game (3.06) and 22nd in shutouts (0.56).
High Scoring...
Duke has scored 55 goals this season, which is the third most in school history. In 1989 the Blue Devils had 67 goals and in 1994 had 60. The Blue Devils own 13 different players who have scored one or more goals and 12 that have scored two or more.![]()
