DURHAM, N.C. - The bracket for the 2004 ACC Women's Soccer Tournament has been released with the Blue Devils receiving the fourth seed and will face fifth-seeded Wake Forest on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. The will be played at the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C.
It marks the second straight year the Blue Devils have been seeded fourth in the tournament and Duke is also looking for its third straight appearance in the semifinals. Last season, Duke defeated Virginia, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals before falling to top-ranked North Carolina, 6-1.
Duke enters the tournament with a 12-6-0 overall and 5-4 league mark, while Wake Forest is 10-5-1, 4-4-1. The winner of the Blue Devil/Demon Deacon match will take on the winner of the top-seeded North Carolina versus eighth-seeded Maryland contest on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Earlier this season, Duke captured a 2-0 victory over Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., as Casey McCluskey and Rebecca Moros registered goals in the win. Freshman Allison Lipsher posted a shutout in goal for the Blue Devils in the victory.
Duke and Wake Forest have met a total of 13 times in the series history with the Blue Devils leading 9-3-1. Overall, the Blue Devils have won the past six straight matches with the Demon Deacons, dating back to 1998.
In ACC Tournament action, the Blue Devils and Demon Deacons have met only twice back in 1996 and 1997. In 1996, the match was played at Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C., as second-seeded Duke fell 3-2 to seventh-seeded Wake Forest. The 1997 match was played at Spry Soccer Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. It went into overtime, after going 2-2 in regulation, with Duke pullout out a 4-3 victory in penalty kicks.
