After starting the ACC schedule with five straight losses, N.C. State has won the past two games in a row at Florida State and Maryland to improve to 10-10 overall, 2-5 in the ACC. Senior Kaayla Chones leads the Wolfpack with 14.7 points and 7.6 rebounds. Head Coach Kay Yow is in her 29th year at NCSU and owns a record of 589-276 at N.C. State.
Chones is one of only five current ACC players who have been on the victory end of a Duke game during their career--Vicki Brick (Maryland), Julie Aderhold (Clemson), Lakeia Stokes (Clemson) and Maggie Slosser (Clemson).
The Series With N.C. State...
The Blue Devils and Wolfpack will square off for the 60th time on Jan. 30. NCSU dominated the series early on but Duke has been making a run with the Wolfpack holding a 38-21 advantage.
NCSU won the first 15 and 19 of the first 20, but Duke has controlled the series the last seven years, winning 13 of the last 16. In games played in Durham, Duke has won the last seven in a row. Coach G owns an overall 15-8 record against NCSU.
Blue Devils To Hit Road Sunday...
After being at home for three straight games, Duke will hit the road for two key ACC contests at Clemson and Florida State on Monday and Wednesday. Beginning with the NCSU game on Friday, the Blue Devils will play three games over the next six days.
Rebounding From A Loss...
Over the last three years, Duke has rebounded to register key win streaks after losing during the regular season. Earlier this season the Blue Devils won 15 in a row after falling to Texas, last season Duke won 15 in a row after falling to Connecticut and in 2001-02 Duke won 22 in a row after falling to Tennessee in Atlanta.
The Injury Bug...
Senior Alana Beard continues to deal with injuries which has sidelined her for the past five practices. On Jan. 20, Beard suffered a strained groin and was limited to only 21 minutes against Maryland on Jan. 22. She went on to miss practice on Jan. 23 and did not compete in shoot around prior to the Tennessee game. Beard also suffered a sprained ligament in her right foot during the Tennessee game and was fitted with orthotics in her shoe to protect the injury. The condition Beard has is also called a Lisfranc injury. She is expected to play on Friday.
Duke Nets Fourth Sellout Versus Tennessee...
For the second time this season and the fourth time over the last two years, Duke played in front of a sold out crowd on Jan. 24 against second-ranked Tennessee. The game also marked the second straight year the Blue Devils hosted a home game which featured No. 1 vs. No. 2.
Beard Has Jersey Retired On Jan. 24...
On Saturday Jan. 24, Duke senior Alana Beard became the first woman in Duke history to have her jersey hung in the rafters of Cameron Indoor Stadium. Her number 20 will now be displayed in the rafters after the 2003-04 season is complete and no Duke women's basketball player will ever wear number 20 again.
A two-time Kodak All-America and 2003 National Player of the Year, Beard is the career point's leader at Duke with 2,338 and continues to move up the ACC career charts as her senior year progresses. The 5-11 guard is currently in third place behind Barbara Kennedy of Clemson (3,113) and Genia Beasley of N.C. State (2,367).
As a freshman at Duke, Beard was the consensus National Freshman of the Year and became the ACC's first freshman to be selected first team All-ACC. So far this season, Beard continues to showcase her talents averaging 18.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.1 blocks. She was just selected the WBCA National Player of the Month for the first two months of the season and has earned ACC Player of the Week on three different occasions. In the preseason, Beard became only the third player to ever be selected preseason first team Associated Press All-America three times along with Tamika Catchings and Chamique Holdsclaw in the preseason.
Beard joined 11 Duke men's basketball players who have had their jerseys retired- Dick Groat (#10), Art Heyman (25), Jeff Mullins (44), Mike Gminski (43), Johnny Dawkins (24), Danny Ferry (35), Christian Laettner (32), Bobby Hurley (11), Grant Hill (33), Shane Battier (31) and Jason Williams (22). In ACC women's basketball, 17 different players have had their jerseys retired.
Duke Women, Men No. 1...
Both the Duke women and men's basketball teams were ranked No. 1 in the nation for the week of Jan. 19, which marked the second straight year both teams have been ranked No. 1 at the same time. Only Duke and Connecticut have accomplished this over the years as Connecticut has done it four different times, including this season.
Tillis Continues Shooting Slump...
After hitting 7-of-12 field goals against Maryland on Jan. 22, senior All-America Iciss Tillis looked as if she broke out of her six-game slump. But her shooting woes came back on Saturday against Tennessee as the versatile forward hit 3-of-16 field goals. Tillis was able to score points other ways as she hit a career-high 9-of-11 free throws to finish with 15 points. She also notched her third double-double of the season with 14 rebounds and had a game-high four steals.
In the six games prior to the Maryland game, Tillis had hit 13 of 58 shots (22.4%), 3-of-13 three-point field goals and averaged only 5.7 points.
Shooting Woes...
As a team, Duke has been in an overall shooting slump over the past eight games. The Blue Devils have shot 41.1 percent from the field and 30.2 from three-point land. The good stat for Duke is its 34.6 field goal percentage defense and 57.5 points allowed. Only Brittany Hunter (54.2) has shot over 50.0 percent from the field during the streak.
Iciss Tillis Named ACC Player of the Week...
Senior Iciss Tillis was named ACC Player of the Week on Wednesday after averaging 18.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, 1.5 assists and 1.5 blocks in two contests. Against Maryland, Tillis led Duke to a 78-48 victory as the Tulsa, Okla., product had 21 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block, while hitting 7-of-12 field goals and 5-of-5 free throws in only 25 minutes of action.
Against Tennessee on Saturday, Tillis had her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Her 14 rebounds tied a career high, while also collecting four steals and two blocks. Tillis also had career highs in free throws hitting 9-of-11.
It marks the first time this season Tillis has been named ACC Player of the Week and the fifth time her four years at Duke.
Beard Owns Scoring Mark...
National Player of the Year candidate Alana Beard has collected another record and this one is probably the biggest one so far during her amazing career. Beard became Duke's all-time leading scorer on Jan. 5 against Florida State and now owns a total of 2,338. Although Moreland set the record in just 111 games, two less than Beard, Beard reached the milestone in fewer minutes played (3,547, compared to Moreland's 3,549).
Beard has already moved into third place on the ACC's all-time career points list and also became only the second Duke men's or women's player to reach the 2,000 point mark in three seasons (Jason Williams). Comparing the men's and women's scoring leaders at Duke, Beard is third behind Johnny Dawkins (2,556) and Christian Laettner (2,460). She recently moved past Mike Gminski (2,323), Chris Moreland (2,232) and Danny Ferry (2,155).
Beard's total of 2,338 ranks tied for 62nd on the NCAA career points scored list. She is one of only four active women's basketball players with 2,000 career points in Division I- Lindsey Whalen of Minnesota (2,123), Kelly Mazzante of Penn State (2,642) and Chandi Jones of Houston (2,344) (upd. Jan. 28).
