PEACHTREE CITY, GA.-- Coming off one of its most successful seasons in school history, the Duke women's tennis team opened the 2003 fall season on Thursday in the Adidas Classic in Peachtree City, Ga. The Blue Devils played only one doubles match on Thursday as the duo of senior Amanda Johnson and freshman Kristin Cargill made quick work of Louisville's Page Eber/Mackenzie Mekus, 8-0.
The doubles schedule for Friday includes Johnson/Cargill versus Sarah Jane Connelly/Kristina Stastny (Notre Dame) in the second round, Saras Arasu/Parker Goyer against Northwestern's Alexis Purosis/Andrea Yung and Tory Zawacki/Jennifer Zika received a bye in the first round.
Duke's singles action begins at 8:00 a.m. in the flight A grouping with Cargill taking on 63rd-ranked Alicia Salas of Notre Dame and Zawacki going up against 79th-ranked Shana McElroy of Wisconsin. Then, at 9:00 a.m. 43rd-ranked Arasu will battle Connelly of Notre Dame and Zika plays Michelle Spiess of Louisville. Johnson, a three-time All-America and currently listed ninth in the ITA rankings, received a bye in the first round.
Goyer, a freshman from Birmingham, Ala., will play in the flight B bracket and will take on Liz Donahue at 10:00 a.m.
Duke finished last season with a 30-3 record and advanced to its sixth NCAA Final Four in school history.
