AUBURN, ALA. - Duke freshman Brittany Lang kicked off her women's golf collegiate career on Friday with a bang as she carded a five-under-par round of 67 during the first day of the NCAA Fall Preview to lead the individual competition by one stroke at the par-72, 6215-yard Grand National Lake Course in Auburn, Ala. As a team, Duke fired a one-under-par round of 287 and trails host Auburn by one stroke.
A native of McKinney, Texas, Lang set a Duke record with the best opening round by a freshman in school history as she registered seven birdies, including three straight to conclude the round. Lang leads the individual competition by one stroke over Nicole Hage of Auburn and Cassandra Krikland of Arizona.
"I got off to a good start and that made me feel pretty comfortable out there on the course," said Lang. "I made a couple of bad club selections at the end of the front nine, so I wasn't very happy about that. Once I birdied the first hole on the back nine, I was able to start making some putts and stuck it close on some holes to close out the round."
Liz Janangelo, a sophomore from West Hartford, Conn., also notched seven birdies on the day and finished with a round of 70, which is tied fifth. Janangelo made the turn with a three-under-par score, but a double-bogey combined with two bogies and three birdies, led to a one-over-par final nine.
Playing in her first collegiate tournament since winning the U.S. Amateur, senior Virada Nirapathpongporn posted a 73 and is tied 18th individually. A Bangkok, Thailand product, Nirapathpongporn held a one-under-par ledger going into the final two holes but suffered a double-bogey on the par-three eighth hole. Freshman Anna Grzebien finished the day with a 77 and is tied 46th in her college debut. Senior Leigh Anne Hardin struggled on Friday finishing with an 82.
The top 12 teams include--Auburn (286), Duke (287), Arizona (289), Vanderbilt (295), Pepperdine (295), Oklahoma (296), Georgia (301), Oklahoma State (301), North Carolina (302), Tulane (303), UCLA (303), Ohio State (303). The Blue Devils began the round on hole 10.
Duke will begin teeing off round two of three on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
