WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With only nine seconds remaining in the Duke women's soccer match on Friday, the sixth-ranked Blue Devils received a goal by junior Casey McCluskey to defeat Oregon State, 2-1, in the opening match of the 2003 Wake Forest adidas Women's Soccer Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C.
After a free kick near the top of the box, McCluskey shot the ball toward the Beavers goalmouth. The ball hit off Oregon State (3-1-1) defender Cara Miller into the open net to give Duke (4-0-1) the victory.
"We did not play well in the first half," said Duke head coach Robbie Church. "We did not play with any intensity. Oregon State really set the tone early with their good play. We picked it up in the second half and felt we deserved the win. We just hung in there and found a way to win. My hats off to Oregon State. They have a great side."
Oregon State took control of the contest early as Brianna Monka scored her fourth goal of the season
at the 19:49 mark. The score remained the same until the 77th minute of action when sophomore Kate Seibert headed in her third goal of the season off a free kick from Carolyn Ford. It marks the third straight contest Seibert, a Dowingtown, Pa., native, has scored a goal and the second straight match Ford has hit Seibert for a goal off a free kick.
In the first half, Oregon State controlled the match outshooting the Blue Devils 5-4, but Duke came alive in the second stanza to outshoot the Beavers 11-4. For the game, Duke held a 15-9 advantage in shots. Picking up the victory in goal for the Blue Devils was junior Kate Straka, who finished with three saves in 90 minutes of work.
Duke will next battle Washington State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
