DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman Brooke Smith has announced she will not return to the Duke women's basketball program and will transfer to another NCAA Division I institution. Smith, a native of San Anselmo, Calif., saw action in 25 games for the Blue Devils last season.
"We love Brooke and think the world of her," said Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors. "We understand she wants to get closer to home and wish her the very best in the future."
Smith was a member of Duke's top-rated recruiting class in 2002 which included Mistie Bass, Lindsey Harding, Caitlin Howe and Jessica Foley. For the 2002-03 season, Smith averaged 3.4 points and 2.5 rebounds in only 9.3 minutes a contest for the Blue Devils.
"My experience at Duke has been great," said Smith. "I have learned a lot about basketball and it was a great experience going to the NCAA Final Four last season. It was an honor to play for this team and with all the talented athletes at Duke. At this point, I think it is in my best interest to attend an institution closer to home."
A four-year letterwinner at Marin Catholic High School, Smith was a McDonald's and WBCA All-America selection as a senior under head coach Rick DeMartini. Smith owned career averages of 14.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and shot 53.0 percent from the field. Coming out of high school, Smith chose Duke over Stanford.
Duke, which advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the second consecutive year, will boast a 2003-04 roster of 11 which includes three seniors (Alana Beard, Iciss Tillis and Vicki Krapohl), one junior (Wynter Whitley), four sophomores (Monique Currie, Harding, Bass and Foley) and three freshmen (Howe, Brittany Hunter and Alison Bales). Both Currie and Howe each sat out last season with torn ACL injuries. The Blue Devils return four starters and welcome back All-America candidate Monique Currie after posting an ACC record 35 victories last year.
