The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team extended its win streak to seven matches with a 4-3 victory over #10 Tennessee on Sunday at the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The Blue Devils are now 16-1 on the season.
Tennessee (16-3) opened the match by taking a 1-0 lead with a hard fought doubles point. Vilmarie Castellvi and Melissa Schaub, the fifth-ranked doubles team in the country, scored a minor upset, defeating Duke's second-ranked duo of Amanda Johnson and Julie DeRoo, 8-6, at first doubles.
Duke won the second doubles match as Kelly McCain and Hillary Adams posted an 8-3 over the Volunteer duo of Tammy Encina/Majen Immink. Tennessee captured the doubles point with Sabita Maharaj/Crystal Cleveland collecting a 9-8 win over Duke's Katie Granson and Julia Smith. Sunday's lost point in doubles action, marked the first time this season Duke failed to claim the doubles point.
The Blue Devils came out strong in singles action winning at number two and then at five to take a 2-1 advantage. Duke received a 6-0, 6-1 victory by 27th-ranked Amanda Johnson over Tennessee's Tammy Encina, while Julie DeRoo collected a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sabita Maharaj in the number five singles match.
The Blue Devils got a 6-2, 6-3 win from Katie Granson at number four to extend its lead to 3-1, before the Volunteers mounted a charge. Tennessee's Ashley Robards collected a 7-5, 1-2 retired win over Duke's number six Katie Blaszak to narrow the score to 3-2.
At number one singles, third-ranked Vilmarie Castellvi posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over second-ranked Kelly McCain to tie the match at 3-3. The match then came down to Duke sophomore Saras Arasu against Crystal Cleveland at the third slot.
